How to Help RIGHT NOW
September 27, 2008
Dear Friends,
Next week, on behalf of the Citizens for a No-Kill Philadelphia, I am meeting with Councilmen Kelly, Greenlee and Jones. Also, State Representative Kathy Manderino who is a co-sponsor of H2525 and H2532 (the puppy-mill bill). I will be pushing them to support a TWO year contract with PACCA. Philadelphia’s animals need to be in a stable environment and the employees and Staff of PAWS need time to be able to implement life saving programs.
I think that it’s important to stay focused on a simple argument that cannot be debated by the City if they are making lifesaving a priority. If we as a citizens want to TRULY embrace No-Kill we need to do so on a city wide scale. This means following the models for success in other cities nation wide.
1. In other cities, multiple agencies working together is the Key Model for success.
2. PACCA with PAWS improved lifesaving by over 600% (11% – 65%) in three years.
The [NYC] Mayor’s Alliance public-private partnership is setting – and being recognized as – a national model for community animal rescue efforts. Groups in Baltimore, Buffalo, Long Island, Ohio, Texas, Albuquerque, and Tulsa now have or are working to create animal alliances replicating the Mayor’s Alliance for NYC’s Animals’ successful model.
The nation wide recognition PACCA and PAWS has received is evidenced by the willingness of other organizations to be a part of our success. The CEO of Best Friends Animal Society, had ongoing plans to help Philadelphia with funding and planning toward No-Kill. Unfortunately, these plans are on hold.
“Best Friends fully supports the goals of ‘Citizens for a No-kill Philadelphia’. Pet overpopulation remains a national tragedy, but communities across the country are making significant gains to save lives.”
- Paul Berry, CEO Best Friends Animal Society
What you can do right now:
Fax your City Officials!
Visit this link to fax your city council representative and tell them that the Health Department has made a terrible decision. They need to reverse this blunder and make life saving a priority. Don’t let them revert to the “Catch and Kill”.
